Stardate:2406.10.29 (USS Nimitz - Ten Forward - CSO Holis Gralen - 1944) "Yes Sir, I did just arrive from the Academy... after a month of travel of course. My prior experience is all in academe, I was working on a joint doctorate in military history and political diplomacy when I decided to follow my dreams instead of doing what everyone else wanted me to do. I travelled for a couple weeks on a science vessel to get here, the Minsk I believe." "Excellent!" Holis smiled at the young ATAC. "Doing what you are expected rather then what you want is a recipe for a lifetime of unhappiness. I am glad you got into your calling when you did.' His eyes widened a bit at the thought of traveling on a strictly science oriented ship. "Your journey sounds intriguing. tell me about the Minsk. What was she like?" (Reply: Paul Casely) Holis was so engrossed in the young man's answer he didn't see the Captain come up and was a bit startled to hear him speak. "Gentlemen, you arrived a little early. Just couldn't wait for a good party?" Holis looked up at Captain Sash with a grin. "Indeed Captain! We wanted to be the first ones at the buffet line." He laughed at his own joke as Devan nodded his head while he smiled down at them wryly. "Well, I don't want to interrupt your conversation. Please carry on." "Absolutely no interruption involved Captain, feel free to join us if you wish." His invitation went unheeded though as Captain Sash was already stepping away, his mind locked on something else. Holis shook his head sadly; the man was very distracted and he felt more than a bit sorry for him, it must be an immense burden to run a starship. After he had walked off Holis turned back to Counselor Harrison. "You've told us very little about yourself John so far, why don't you carry the conversation for a while." Paul thought for a second about all the intelligent people on board who were also dreadfully boring. He wondered at a way to be diplomatic about his experiences there. "Well, the group was definitely passionate about what they did. There was always a conversation or demonstration going on somewhere about someone's work. I think it was the perfect environment for a group of scientists, they could live, eat, and breathe science while together and most people always understood what was going on to some degree. There were occasional disagreements, but nothing too horrible. They definitely were proud of what they were doing and happy to be doing it," answered Paul. I was on a transport ship from Earth to Starbase Geneva so i could join them before the last mission. Didn't know what I was getting myself into! I signed up for the whole 'new worlds, new civilisations' and all that." He took a sip of his drink and continued. "Don't get me wrong - I'm glad I'm here. I'm actually the first of my family to ever leave Earth. I always wanted to go into space. But it's a bit more dangerous that I originally thought. And complicated. "How are things going with you?" She shrugged a little. "The usual, I guess. Your crew doesn't trust 'the traitor-spy' as they are calling me. A couple of incidents of people breaking into my Quarters, someone rewired my replicator to only give out dog food... the usual. I don't expect it to be easy, Captain. They don't trust me, and they don't want me. Sometimes I wish I had died over there. It would be a lot easier than living with my memories. He could feel the hackles rising on the bakc of his neck, and forced himself to relax. All this happened in an instant. When the song ended, Sash felt Dumas pull away saying, "This was a mistake." Sash held on to her hand and she snapped back, the look of surprise on her face. "I must apologize." He shook his head. "I just assumed everyone would understand the completeness of your sacrafice, and also what it gave them." The music started again and Sash began to sway with the rhythm, and Cithy followed his lead. While he wasn't thinking about what he was doing, he let his natural tendancies take over, and his dancing greatly mproved. "Whether you think it's natural or not is a mistake. I do not. You gave up everything to save our lives, and you should not be repaid by cruel and unthinking behavior." He stopped moving and took her chin in his hand, lifting her eyes to look int his. " you are not the traitor that you, or anybody else thinks you are. You just saw the light a little later than the others." Holis had done his share of mingling like the rest and was thinking of making his way back to his cabin. The bottle of Napoleon brandy he had acquired an hour ago had been opened a couple of times since then and he was feeling all aglow as he leaned against the wall near the table where they had been sitting. The glass was nearly empty again but he intended on keeping it that way, he still hadn't eaten yet and the bottle was nearly a third empty. Holis couldn't help but look at her as she entered, to say she was striking was an understatement. The young woman that had entered with the Doctor had been striking but while this lady was equal to her in loveliness there were other things about her that stood out, first of all was that she was extremely pale, seeming to ride in on the rays of Skeleste one of Betazed's moons. Secondly was the long black and intricately done hair that spilled down the back of her shimmering blouse and skirt and her large, sapphire blue eyes. Thirdly was the mental nudge he had felt before the door had slid open. Holis lowered his screens a bit and absorbed some mental impressions; this was the one he had felt on his first day here; the one that Captain Sash said had lost her Imzadi! He smiled at her as she looked around then nodded sadly to himself as he looked away from her, she still carried echoes of the pain from that experience when the one to whom she had been not only physically and mentally bonded but also psychically connected with had been killed. Holis felt a thrill like electricity run through his fingers as he downed the last of the liquor in the glass and knew that he had overdone it, he wanted to kick himself as the feeling began to spread to his face. ~D*mn it! I have certainly drunk too much and am going to pay for this in the morning.~ Holis hesitated for an instant then motioned the waiter over. Since he planned on leaving shortly he would make his appetizer something quick both to prepare and eat. "I would like a small plate of crab rolls please." The waiter nodded and moved off then Holis turned back to watching the gathered officers. It was a short while later when he saw the waiter moving in his direction with the tray and he relaxed a bit, the tingling had worked its way around and he needed to eat something to fight off the alcohols' effects. The waiter sat the tray down and Holis had turned to slide into his chair when he felt someone bump into him. He felt liquid splash down the left side of his uniform and turned himself around to find the dark haired woman, the Captain had said her name was Kirien who he found was as tall as he was staring into his eyes. She blushed before speaking. ::I'm so sorry. You must be new, I don't recall another full betazoid on board.:: She blinked and flushed again and after the initial shock he managed to reply. ::That's quite all right.:: he looked down at his uniform again then back at her. ::It won't stain and I was going to leave soon anyway..:: he picked up a napkin and wiped at it ::Excuse me, I need more punch.:: She thought to him. ::NO don't go! Please. Have a seat and a crabroll if you would like. I can get you some more punch. I need to get another napkin anyway.:: He pulled a chair out for her and nodded toward it and watched as she sat down then tucked her chair in for her, she was quite beautiful and charming and he refused to let her get away so easily. ::I'll only be a moment.:: (Reply: Kirien) After pouring a generous cup of punch he threaded his way back to the table, his idea of leaving quickly had left him very unexpectedly as he was determined to get better acquainted with the lady. He set the glass and napkins on the table before her and took his seat then helped himself to a crabroll. ::Forgive me for being so hasty earlier. You mentioned not seeing another full Betazoid on board before and the truth is you're correct, I just arrived yesterday.:: He took another bite of it and found it quite delicious. ~I'll have to remember this, it is apparently one of their specialities.~ ::How long have you been on board?:: He tried not to stare as she replied. He decided that this Casely was not really bad for a human and might not so bad to work with. He might even take him under his wing and train him in a few Klingon items. Maybe he would like to train with K'ven to hone his skills, every warrior wants to be better in battle. He looked over at Gideon, which, it seemed that he was a bit uncomfortable around him. Gideon had gotten that way ever since the successful accomplishment of the mission they both shared. He drank some with them but he just seemed like he wanted to be somewhere else. K'ven knew that they had to one day have a talk to clear the air between them, an honorable talk not the bull that warriors put between them. They had been through too much to be at each others throat every time they come close. He saw Onyx on the other side of the room and was about to move over to see her when Gideon spoke up as a Betazoid female walked in. It came across his mind that maybe Gideon had a thing for this woman. "Im going to speak to that Kirien woman and offer my condolences," "Not a problem Sirrrr... been nice meeting you," Paul slurred ever so slightly before taking another swig of the drink in front of him and then knocking it back. He waved at the waiter to fill his glass again. "Gideon," K'ven started but he was already out of hearing, so, he dropped it. He was curious why he would be offering his condolences to the woman. He turned to look at Casely to ask him, but, he looked a little under the conversation mode with the amount of drink he had consumed. He decided to go talk to Onyx since she looked like she needed someone to talk to. "I will return Ensign" He said as he moved away from the bar toward Onyx. But with things once more under control in Engineering, ZZt had been looking forward to the this party. He enjoyed mingling and making new friends. He had stopped by his quarters to get rid of his dirty uniform and pick up an item. Zzt strode boldly into the room, the sunglasses Falthgood had given him squarely on his snout, and not a single thread of clothing on his massive furry body. Zzt batted at the streamers in the room that keep getting caught on his ears. Zzt sniffed the air as he moved over to the large buffet table, oblivious to the ruckus his presence had already caused. There was a large bowl in the middle of the buffet table. ~They put a drink out just for me!~ With one large paw, Zzt reached down and lifted the punch bowl and began lapping at the liquid with his large tongue. He turned to look at who was present. He quickly noticed a klingon sitting at one of the tables. Zzt's eyes widened in surprise and quickly headed that way. Zzt tapped the Klingon on the top of the head with one claw, his other paw still holding the punch bowl easily. "Hi," Zzt said when the Klingon turned around, "me Zzt. Who you? You new." Zzt smiled, barring his large fangs. Zzt lapped from the punch bowl some more. (Reply K'ven, Anyone else noticing the 10 foot tall naked bear in the room.) He looked at the Klingon who seemd to want to ask him something and then rethought his decision. "I will return Ensign" K'Ven said as he moved away from the bar toward Ensign Kateb. Paul shrugged his shoulders and contemplated his drink. He felt a bit "fuzzy" but still in control of his general facilties... at least he thought he was until he looked up from his drink at the door. Paul's eyes grew wide as he watched what looked to be a bear walk into Ten Forward on its hind legs. No one else seemed that concerned, or to even notice. Paul looked to his drink, and then to the bear. "Ummm... waiter... take this, " he said motioning at the drink, "away please... and could you give me some water. Just plain water." Paul then rubbed his eyes as the drinks were switched and looked again. ~Nope, its still there... I must be in worse shape then I thought.~ "Uh... waiter, excuse me?" pleaded Paul. "Yes Sir?" "Ummm... I know this sounds like a setup for a bad joke, but is there a bear in the room?" questioned Paul. "Actually, Sir, in a manner of speaking, yes I suppose there is," answered the waiter with a slight smile. Paul now wondered what the heck this strange ship was all about. To let bears roam around throughout the ship was ridiculous. Paul looked to the bear again, just as it was about to tap K'Ven on the head. Still feeling slightly light headed, Paul shrugged. ~If this is a problem, I'm sure a Klingon warrior can handle it.~ At that point Paul picked up his water and began to walk deeper into Ten Forward, away from the bear. In the processed of standing and turning in the direction that the tap felt it came from, he found himself face to face with a sight he had not had in a long time. He was looking at a furry beast that reminded him of a Rectyne Monopod, but, this thing had fur. He could not decide to laugh or attack as this furry beast had the punch bowl in one paw and was wearing sunglasses. "Hi," Zzt said, "me Zzt. Who you? You new." Zzt smiled, barring his large fangs. As the big furry animal bared his fangs, K'ven drew his Daqtagh then went to a defense stance. He was not sure what the attack plan of this furry thing was as it lapped up the contents of the bowl. This was confusing him and he did not like being confused as he growled at the animal. It's size did not give him cause to worry as he had taken on more beast of his size and won. Edward will do as well Casely unless we are in a combat situation," Paul was shocked by the sudden familiarity of the Lieutenant Commander; he certainly hadn't counted on this. "Yes Si... I mean Edward... I'm Paul by the way. Do you think he's going to give us trouble?" Paul asked, ready for trouble but secretly hoping that physical action wouldn’t be necessary. Edward looked back to the marine and then spoke to Paul again. “I do not see a problem, he seems quite calmer now,” Edward turned away and faced the Private once more. “Private, these two security officers are two of my finest. They will be escorting you to the brig until I have chance to contact your Major. Please do not give me any further problems private,” Edward stated signalling for the two security guards to move in on the Private. (Reply Kane) Edward turned back to the assistant’s position and then cleared his throat. The security officers he had sent would not take any messing around. Edward gestured for Paul to begin walking back towards the 10 forward lounge.” I have been impressed Paul. It took a lot for you to stand up to a Klingon and Starfleet Senior officers,” "I wasn't aware I'd stood up to Starfleet Senior Officers... I did my duty as is laid out by Starfleet and attempted to follow the ideals that were set out for us," answered Paul, "In the end, we are all subject to the same rules of law, if we forget that we become exactly like the people of the 'Starfleet' we are trying to oppose. At least, that's the way I see it, Sir," concluded Paul. Ed grinned and nodded in agreement; the tactical officer did not lack the ability to speak his mind. That was an ability that Edward was impressed by and something he always encouraged. “ Our situation is a difficult one to say the least Paul. I fought for what people here would consider the other side up until very recently. This fleet has acted a little fool heartedly running in with out totally thinking things through. They have entered the Beta quadrant with little support of the native people like so many other forces through out history. Im not a fan of this situation ‘from ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean’,” "Romeo and Juliet, Prologue, line 4...Edward," responded Paul with a slight grin. Edward returned the grin. "Not many know that, personally im a fan of Shakespeare," "I used to visit Stratford, Ontario to see plays as a child, my parents were very big on me having a 'classical education'," replied Paul as his grin faded slightly at the thought of his parents. "Ahh, my species hid on Earth for a considerable amount of time apparently Romeo and Juliet was better at the original Theatre. In the original old tongue," Edward stated grinning to himself; the memories of his previous family filled his head with poetry and drama on a regular basis. He was the only person that could truly and sanely hold a conversation with himself. "Well, I'm not old enough to really have seen any 'original' Shakespeare in the 'original' Globe. I had to be happy with a substitute I'm afraid... of course, Shakespeare is still a standard in our school systems as well so I did study many of his works. Then in University for my undergrad I spent a good deal of time studying his histories and how they were warped from realities," stated Paul. "Yes you have 21st century media to thank for that Paul. Apparently one group of peoples decided to rewrite history. The saying the Klingons use is most apt 'History is written by the Victors," Edward stated "Actually, Shakespeare rewrote history all on his own," replied Paul, "That has happened throughout our history." "Yes to please the Tudors if my memory serves. Richard the 3rd is the most comical for the abuse of history. I do believe the Klingons have it right," "The Klingons have more correct than most people give them credit for, even if they do put forth their ideas in rather... abrupt... ways sometimes," grinned Paul. "From your dealings with Mr. K'Ven I would presume you have held dealings with them before," Edward guessed after the Ensigns impressive control of the Officer. Paul chuckled aloud and looked Edward dead in the eye. "Actually, I was playing a hunch. He was the first Klingon I've met. I have Masters degrees in Military/Tactical History and the Politics of Diplomacy. My dissertation was based on how if we want to be more successful in our dealings with other species, we have to understand their culture and appeal to them, at least in part, in tones and ways that they understand. I guess I took a risk putting my theory into practice." "Well you shall defiantly do my wife proud, she too acts more on hunches than anything else," Edward stated thinking back to the forceful character that she was. "Well, to be fair, it was a hunch based on research. I'm not just another pretty face you know?" grinned Paul. "My fellow I don’t really consider men pretty. Hopefully my wife doesn’t find you pretty either," Edward stated playfully. Paul laughed out loud at this point. "Don't worry, I would never try to do anything with another man's wife... especially if that man is my superior officer," said Paul winking. “She would get you before I got near you, more violent than me. In all realism im more suited to Tactical and her Security. She is a good boss though and will teach you a lot. Speaking of her I have neglected her some what and you need to get around and chat to the others,” "I understand... I have something I have to say to Captain Sash anyway. Besides, it’s getting late, early morning tomorrow for me," stated Paul. "A pleasure to talk to you some more Paul, have a good evening," "You as well, Edward." Edward grinned and then walked off towards Onyx who stood near the wall. Tugging her a little he gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I like the new guy not as much as I like you though. You had a good evening?” Edward stated placing his hand around her waist. He waved at the waiter to fill his glass again. (Reply K’Ven, Gideon, any) The waiter brought Paul's drink and sat it in front of him and he waved the man over closer. "Say, do you think we could get some food here please," inquired Paul. His voice was even, but definitely starting to take on a slightly inebriated tone. "Yes Sir, of course," came the quick reply of the waiter as he glanced quickly at the Klingon sitting beside Paul, word travels fast. "Good, bring us some cretons," demanded Paul. "Some what, Sir? I'm not sure we have those." the waiter definitely looked puzzled, as puzzled as an earlier one had by Paul's request of rye and ginger. ~Geez, what do they teach these people?~ thought Paul. "Creton. Just go to the replicator and ask for it. I know we have it because I programmed it in myself this afternoon," responded Paul. "Yes Sir, very good, sir," came the response. (reply K'Ven, any) Soon the waiter brought a pale pink paste to the table and put it in front of Paul along with a plate of toast. "Its pigs meat mixed with pig fat, breadcrumbs and spices," explained Paul, "My mother used to always make it. Try some if you like." Then Paul began to eat. He was certainly hungry and hoped that this would help with the processing of the alcohol he had in his system. (Reply K'Ven, any) (Posted by Jeff)
